Based on the best-selling book The American Creed: A Spiritual and Patriotic Primer by Forrest Church, "The American Creed" explores the pivotal moments in American history framed by the Jeffersonian Creed that was laid out in the Declaration of Independence more than 200 years ago: "all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

The documentary chronicles the struggles of a new nation looking to find itself and its soul, and to live up to the values presented in the creed set forth by the nation's founding fathers. From slavery and the Civil War, to the women's suffrage movement, immigration, the labor movement, and later, to the Great Depression and the civil rights movement, "The American Creed" explores how Jefferson's Creed has become the benchmark of what Americans can strive to be, and the example that they can set for the rest of the world.
