American Bible Society

History
In 1816, pastors and laymen representing and variety of Christian denominations gathered in New York City to establish and organization "to disseminate the Gospel of Christ throughout the habitable world." Since that time, the American Bible Society has continued to provide God's Word, without doctrinal note or comment. The headquarters of the American bible Society is in new York City. It is a non-profit, interconfessional organization with a rich Judeo-Christian heritage committed to the translation, publication, and distribution of the Holy Scriptures.

The mission statement of the American Bible states that its purpose is to make the Bible available to every person in a language and format each can understand and afford. Fifty years ago, the American Bible Society played a leading role in the founding of the United Bible Societies that consists of national Bible Societies from around the world. The United Bible Societies is now a vehicle for working in a global fellowship to attain the widest possible distribution of the Holy Scriptures. The UBS has 127 member Bible Societies or Offices, working in ore than 200 countries and territories.

The work of the ABS is supported through gifts from individuals, local churches, denominations and cooperating agencies. The American Bible Society distributes more than 107 million copies of the Bible, New Testament and Scripture Portions in the United States each year. Beliefs
The ABS is the servant of the denominations and local churches. It provides Scriptures at very low costs in various attractive formats for their use in outreach ministries in the United States and across the world.

The American Bible Society carries out its mission by:

  • Affirming the power of God to speak to every generation through the Holy Scriptures;
  • Providing translations of the Holy Scriptures that are faithful to the wording of the original language Biblical texts;
  • Working in partnership with all Christian churches and Christian communities;
  • Producing materials that avoid endorsing or advocating any doctrinal positions;
  • Utilizing appropriate communication tools that allow the Word of God to come alive in individual and public life.
